The Carriage Roads meander throughout Acadia National Park’s east side of Mt. Desert Island and feature 17 unique bridges. According to the National Park Service, “Forty-five miles of rustic carriage roads, the gift of philanthropist John D. Rockefeller Jr. and family, weave around the mountains and valleys of Acadia National Park. Rockefeller, a skilled horseman, wanted to travel on motor-free byways via horse and carriage into the heart of Mount Desert Island.” (NPS)
Today you can access the carriage roads on foot, bicycle, or via a horse-drawn carriage. There are wonderful photography opportunities all along the carriage roads, from ponds to forests to unique bridges, you will surely find something you love!
