Cadillac Mountain is one of the top photography locations for sunrise in Acadia National Park. As such, it fills up quickly. Cadillac Mountain is “the highest point on the eastern seaboard of the U.S., and offers magnificent views of a glaciated coastal and island landscape.” (NPS) In addition to its beautiful views, Cadillac Mountain is also special because it is the “first place to view sunrise in the United States from October 7 through March 6.” (Acadia Magic) The Cadillac Summit Loop Trail, accessible from the parking lot, is a gentle paved trail that allows you to see many different vantage points of these views.
Accessing the Cadillac Mountain Summit in Acadia National Park
Starting Location: Cadillac Mountain Parking Lot, Bar Harbor, ME
GPS (DD): 44.35240, -68.22463
The entrance to the Cadillac Mountain Summit Road is located off of Park Loop Road in Acadia National Park. While it is fairly easy to drive to the summit of Cadillac Mountain, gaining access during the summer months requires a reservation.
If you are unable to get a reservation, you may be able to enter on foot or bike. The two main hikes leading to the Cadillac Mountain Summit are the 4.2 mi (6.8 km) Cadillac North Ridge Trail and the 6.7 mi (10.8 km) Cadillac South Ridge Trail.
Once you arrive at the parking lot, the main vistas are easily accessible via the Cadillac Summit Loop Trail. Take your time exploring this beautiful summit area. Please note that even during the summer months, it can be cold at the summit. Hand warmers, a blanket, and hot chocolate are recommended. I’ve used a jetty boil to quickly heat up water for hot chocolate and loved it.
Find Your Favorite Location
No matter where you stop, Acadia National Park provides amazing landscape photography opportunities. Be sure to take your time and find your favorite location along the way. If you are lucky, you may even spot some wildlife! Don’t forget to add detailed macro shots, change your perspective, and most importantly have fun.
Before making your trip, consider checking the official Acadia National Park website or contacting the park’s visitor center for the most up-to-date information on trail conditions, accessibility, and any recent changes. As with any visit to a national park, it’s important to follow park regulations, practice “Leave No Trace” principles, and prioritize safety while exploring this beautiful area. If you are able to go, I hope you enjoy your time photographing the Cadillac Mountain Summit!
Happy Travels!
