✨ Featured National Park Photographer Spotlight! ✨ Featured National Park Photographer Spotlight! ✨ Meet Maria Jaeger:

I am Maria Jaeger, a landscape photographer living in VA. My journey began wandering the Blue Ridge Mountains at dawn, learning to chase the perfect light and those beautiful, unforgettable moments in early morning. I’m drawn to the wild beauty of nature in particular the Grand Teton National Park—a place where towering peaks, glassy reflections, vibrant wildflowers, and beautiful forests come to draw me in. The Tetons feel like home to me. Their rugged presence, ever-changing light, and serene stillness fuel my creativity.
I chase those quiet moments when nature reveals something truly timeless. I’m always looking for the right compositions—reflections in still water, textures in the trees, or wildflowers glowing in golden hour light. Every photo I take is more than just an image to me—it’s a way to hold onto a moment forever, to remember what it felt like to stand there in awe.

I believe in planning—but more importantly, in going with the moment. I immerse myself in what I see, and the unique details through the viewfinder. Photography is about feeling as much as it is about technique. I experiment often, adjusting settings and perspectives as I go. Rules can guide you, but I don't always follow them—because photography is art, and art knows no rules.

Photography is my way of exploring the world and keeping the wild places close to my heart.

The Acadia Mountain Trail is a moderate 2.5 mile loop trail that ascends rocky staircases and connects with the Man O' War Brook Trail. We went in a counterclockwise direction. When you go, be sure to have a way to carry your gear while you rock scramble. I had to use my tripod on several occasions as a hiking pole to help me navigate the uneven terrain. At only a 681 foot summit, this one was definitely worth the hike!

Landscape Photography Tips! Here are 10 top tips f Landscape Photography Tips! Here are 10 top tips for landscape photography to help you capture stunning, professional-looking shots:

🌄 1. Shoot During Golden Hour
Early morning and late afternoon light is soft, warm, and directional—ideal for dramatic landscapes.
Avoid harsh midday light unless you're going for a high-contrast look.

📐 2. Use the Rule of Thirds
Place key elements (horizons, trees, mountains) along imaginary thirds lines to create balance and interest.
Most cameras have grid overlays to help with this.

🌫 3. Include a Foreground Element
Rocks, plants, water—something in the foreground gives depth and draws the viewer into the scene.
Helps create a strong sense of scale.

🌍 4. Use a Tripod
Essential for sharp shots at slower shutter speeds, especially in low light.
Also helps with careful composition and panorama shots.

🔍 5. Focus on Depth of Field
Use a narrow aperture (like f/8 to f/16) to get everything in sharp focus.
Focus about 1/3 into the scene for maximum depth (hyperfocal distance technique).

☁️ 6. Watch the Sky
The sky can make or break a landscape shot.
If it’s dramatic, include more sky; if dull, minimize it and emphasize the land.

🌦 7. Embrace Weather Conditions
Mist, fog, storms, and dramatic clouds often make for more compelling images than clear blue skies.
Don’t be afraid to shoot in “bad” weather—just protect your gear.

🔲 8. Use Filters
Polarizing filters reduce glare and enhance colors (especially blue skies and water).
ND (neutral density) filters help you take long exposures during the day (great for smooth water or clouds).

📷 9. Shoot in RAW
RAW files retain much more image data than JPEGs, giving you more control when editing.
Essential for recovering highlights or shadows.

🧭 10. Scout and Plan Ahead
Use apps like PhotoPills, The Photographer’s Ephemeris, or Google Earth to plan locations and lighting. Visiting a location multiple times often results in the best shots.

✨Featured National Park Photographer Spotlight!✨ Meet Philip Hart!

I grew up just outside of Atlanta, Georgia. With Atlanta's proximity to outdoor treasures like Great Smoky Mountains National Park, I had access to nature from a young age. I remember searching for bears and deer in Cade's Cove and doing a waterfall hike as a child in the Smoky Mountains. Being close to the Appalachian Mountains and National Forests in North Georgia also has so much to offer like wildlife, beautiful hikes, and waterfalls.

I did not really get into photographing nature until later in life. It has always been something that has interested me, but I never really invested the time and money to learn the art of photography. Additionally, I have been a teacher for 20+ years which is an extremely busy profession. My wife, sons, and I had the opportunity to move to Seoul, South Korea in 2016 and we spent 5 great years there. It was there, during Covid, that I found the time and honestly, the need, to get outside and become a photographer. I watched every video I could, made mistakes, shot every chance I could and eventually started to understand how a camera worked. I am really interested in improving my landscape photography, and enjoy the challenge of long-exposure photography with water and night skies. I love wildlife photography as well.

Since coming back from Korea, my wife and I have made it a goal to visit every National Park. We are currently at 16, and add a few each year. Capturing moments during our travels outdoors, abroad and even in my hometown is something that fills my need for creativity, enjoy the outdoors, and share my art with others.

Beyond photography, I love hiking, camping, coffee, learning languages, baking sourdough bread, and family. It is my dream to one day have a camper van so that my wife and I can fulfill our goal of all 63 national parks and, of course, taking as many photos as possible along the way. We also enjoy visiting national monuments, historic sites, etc. We have the National Park Passport book and have found that we are addicted to getting our stickers and stamps. Those that know, know.

Meet our Featured National Park Photographer Ambas Meet our Featured National Park Photographer Ambassador, Greg Thomas:

I am an amateur photographer based in Virginia Beach and recently retired. My interest in photography started when I saw pictures in magazines like Sports Illustrated, Life, and National Geographic. When I graduated from college, I bought my first camera (a Pentax) and have been taking pictures ever since. I have been using Canon gear for 30+ years and currently have a Canon R5 and several lenses.

My wife and I enjoy traveling and fortunately she indulges my photography hobby. I enjoy taking photos of almost any subject -landscape, birds, sports, nature and travel. My wife and I enjoy visiting national parks and have been to around 27 so far. I enjoy having people be interested in the subject to either want to visit there or to have an idea of what it was like to experience it if they are unable to visit.
