Length: Minimal
Elevation: 8800 ft (2682 m)
Route Type: Overlook
Location: Mile 13.5 on the 18-mile Southern Scenic Drive

The Agua Canyon Overlook provides a stunning panoramic view of Bryce Canyon National Park’s Agua Canyon and neighboring Ponderosa Canyon. This overlook is a popular spot for photographers, especially during sunrise and sunset, when the low light can enhance the colors and textures of the rock formations.

Accessing the Agua Canyon Overlook

The Agua Canyon Overlook is located at mile 13.5 of the 18-mile Southern Scenic Drive (UT-63). This is a quick “in and out” vista. Because the pullout for the Agua Canyon Overlook is located on the left hand side of the road, I recommend going to Rainbow Point first and then pulling out on your way back down to the Bryce Amphitheater.

Be sure to check the park website for current road conditions as there are sometimes road closures, especially during the winter months. Please note that as the park shuttle does not go to any of the overlooks along the Southern Scenic Drive, you will need to drive to get there. As this stop has no trail access, and there is minimal walking required, you should be able to find a parking spot as cars are constantly coming and going.

Iconic Hoodoos at the Agua Canyon Overlook

The Agua Canyon Overlook offers a spectacular view of some of Bryce Canyon’s famous hoodoos, tall, thin spires of rock that have been shaped by erosion. Two particularly striking hoodoos, known as “The Hunter” and “The Rabbit” or “Backpacker” can be seen from this vantage point.

According to the National Park Service, “In the early years of Bryce Canyon National Park a great effort was made to name many of the more prominent hoodoos. Over the years many of these have fallen or partially fallen so that they look nothing like the things they were originally named for.” Because of this, the hoodoos are no longer being named. However, you can still use your creativity to see if you can find interesting shapes in the rocks.

High Elevation = Amazing Vistas

Situated at an elevation of approximately 8,800 ft (2,682 m), the Agua Canyon Overlook provides a breathtaking view of the surrounding landscape. I especially loved the contrast between the red rock, blue skies, and vibrant evergreens. You can also see rolling hills in the background. Because of the high elevation, it is important to be prepared for rapidly changing weather conditions.

Colorful Rock Layers at Agua Canyon

The geological formations visible from the Agua Canyon Overlook showcase vibrant colors, ranging from red and orange to a light sandstone color, highlighting the layers of sedimentary rock that have been exposed over time. As the sun changes its location in the sky, the rocks and hoodoos can change colors as well, providing unique photography opportunities. Even though it is a quick stop, it is worth getting out of your car to see.
