Piracy Point, located in Bryce Canyon National Park, is one of two overlooks accessible from the Farview Point pull-out. Farview Point can be viewed right next to the parking area, and Piracy Point is a only short hike away. According to the National Park Service, “Piracy Point has been said to take its name from the buttes that might resemble pirate ships sailing alongside the rim, but it’s more likely that the name refers to a geomorphological process that is soon to take place here,” a process known as “stream-piracy.” This phenomenon occurs when water is diverted from an original stream to a neighboring stream due to changes in sediment and drainage. Regardless of where the name came from, it’s a beautiful lookout and well worth the hike.
Accessing the Piracy Point Overlook
The Piracy Point Overlook is located at mile 10.25 of the 18-mile Southern Scenic Drive. You can access the short, flat, and unpaved .4 mi (.64 km) hiking trail from the Farview Point parking lot. There is a restroom here, if needed. Because the pullout for the Farview Point Overlook is located on the left hand side of the road, I recommend going to Rainbow Point first and then pulling out on your way back down to the Bryce Amphitheater.
Be sure to check the park website for current road conditions as there are sometimes road closures, especially during the winter months. Please note that as the park shuttle does not go to any of the overlooks along the Southern Scenic Drive, you will need to drive to get there.
Amazing Vistas at the Piracy Point Overlook
I fell in love with Piracy Point. While the trail was slightly icy and muddy when I went, the colors were magnificent and there was a lot of diversity. Piracy Point overlooks Sheep Creek and Swamp Canyon, offering a unique perspective. It is a great location for landscape photography. Because of the high elevation, it is important to be prepared for rapidly changing weather conditions.
Find Your Favorite Location
No matter where you stop, you will love the vistas found along the Southern Scenic Drive. Be sure to take your time and find your favorite location along the way. If you are lucky, you may even spot some wildlife! Don’t forget to add detailed shots of the hoodoos, change your perspective, and most importantly enjoy your time in Bryce Canyon National Park.
Before making your trip, consider checking the official Bryce Canyon National Park website or contacting the park’s visitor center for the most up-to-date information on trail conditions, accessibility, and any recent changes. As with any visit to a national park, it’s important to follow park regulations, practice “Leave No Trace” principles, and prioritize safety while exploring this beautiful area. Enjoy your time exploring the natural wonders of the Piracy Point Overlook!
