The Ponderosa Canyon Overlook, also known as Ponderosa Point, provides a stunning view of Ponderosa Canyon in Bryce Canyon National Park. What I loved about this overlook was the contrast between the green trees, rainbow mountains, and red rock hoodoos. You can access the Agua Canyon Connecting Trailhead here (currently closed – click here for current conditions).
Accessing the Ponderosa Canyon Overlook
Starting Location: Mile 14.75 on the 18-mile Southern Scenic Drive

The Ponderosa Canyon Overlook is located at mile 14.75 of the 18-mile Southern Scenic Drive (UT-63). This is a quick “in and out” vista. Because the pullout for the Ponderosa Canyon Overlook is located on the left hand side of the road, I recommend going to Rainbow Point first and then pulling out on your way back down to the Bryce Amphitheater.
Be sure to check the park website for current road conditions as there are sometimes road closures, especially during the winter months. Please note that as the park shuttle does not go to any of the overlooks along the Southern Scenic Drive, you will need to drive to get there.
Amazing Vistas at the Ponderosa Canyon Overlook
Situated at an elevation of approximately 8904 ft (2714 m), the Ponderosa Canyon Overlook provides a breathtaking view of the surrounding landscape. According to the National Park Service, “Ponderosa Canyon is so named because of the huge Ponderosa Pines on the canyon floor. Some of these trees measure more than 5 ft. in diameter and exceed heights of 150 ft. However from high above at the viewpoint you would never know this.”
The far distant vistas seen from here are similar to the ones found at the Black Birch Canyon Overlook with views of hoodoos, the Navajo Mountain, and the upper steps of the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. It is a great location for landscape photography. Because of the high elevation, it is important to be prepared for rapidly changing weather conditions.
Find Your Favorite Location
No matter where you stop, you will love the vistas found along the Southern Scenic Drive. Be sure to take your time and find your favorite location along the way. If you are lucky, you may even spot some wildlife! Don’t forget to add detailed shots of the hoodoos, change your perspective, and most importantly enjoy your time in Bryce Canyon National Park.
