📍 Location & Trail Information
The Thunder Hole is located along the eastern shore of Mount Desert Island in Acadia National Park. It is a narrow inlet carved into the rocky coastline, and a short stairway leads down toward the water from the viewing deck above. Waves funnel into the channel and send up white spray against the pink granite ledges, with the open Atlantic stretching out beyond. From the upper deck you can take in the upright rock formation around the inlet, with the coastline curving away toward Sand Beach in one direction and Otter Point in the other. At low tide the stairs lead to a closer look at the cliff walls that the surf has sculpted. If you are already exploring this stretch of the park, Thunder Hole is well worth a stop.
