Inspiration Point

Length: .6 mi (1 km)
Elevation Gain: 134 ft (40.8 m)
Route Type: Out and Back
Starting Location: Inspiration Point Parking Lot

Inspiration Point is a very popular photography destination in Bryce Canyon National Park and offers spectacular vistas of the Bryce Amphitheater. According to the National Park Service, “The viewpoint at Inspiration Point consists of three levels that provide varied spectacular perspectives of the main amphitheater. From here, visitors look toward the Silent City (near Sunset Point) with its many rows of seemingly frozen hoodoos set against the backdrop of Boat Mesa. All who look out from this point are bound to be inspired.”

Accessing Inspiration Point

Inspiration Point is located right off of Bryce Point Road in Bryce Canyon National Park. To get there, take the main park road, UT-63 south, and then take a left onto Bryce Point Road. The turnoff for Inspiration Point is well labeled and is the first road on the left once you enter Bryce Point Road. There is a parking lot at Inspiration point with easy access to the three separate viewpoints: Lower, Middle, and Upper.

Be sure to check the park website for current road conditions as there are sometimes road closures, especially during the winter months. That said, the first 3 miles of the main park road in Bryce Canyon are the first to be plowed and so the closures will usually be temporary. As this is a popular stop in the park, you can also use the park shuttle in the summer months to access Inspiration Point.

Lower Viewpoint

The above photograph was taken from the lower viewpoint of Inspiration Point. This view is easily accessible, close to the parking lot, and is beautiful. One thing I like about the lower viewpoint is how close the canyon is. You feel as if you are staring out across an endless sea of hoodoos.

The lower viewpoint at Inspiration Point has close access to the Rim Trail and is only .5 mi (.8 km) away from Sunset Point. In addition to visiting Inspiration Point, walking along the Rim Trail for even a small section will also provide many unique photography opportunities. One thing to be aware of at Inspiration Point (as well as most points along the Rim Trail) is that there are steep drop offs all over the place. The hiking trails are well marked and easy to follow, but if you have small children, keep them close by for safety.

Middle Viewpoint

The middle viewpoint of Inspiration Point (pictured above) offers a unique perspective and gives some more amazing views of the Bryce Amphitheater. Photographically, I really liked the closer rock formations contrasted against the sweeping background vista.

After photographing the middle viewpoint of Inspiration Point in Bryce Canyon National Park, we headed up the walking path towards the upper viewpoint. Although the walking path felt pretty steep, it had hand rails and the path was clean and easy to navigate. It was also beautiful. On one side of the path there was a densely forested area with bits of snow on the ground while on the other side we caught glimpses of the Bryce Amphitheater. The diversity in the ecosystem at Bryce Canyon is truly amazing and part of the experience.

Upper Viewpoint

When we finally arrived at the top of Inspiration point, all I could way was, “Wow!” The upper viewpoint of Inspiration Point allows you to stare out at eye level with some incredible formations. Although slightly steep, the upper viewpoint is stunning and is worth the extra effort to see.

We saw deep canyon gulfs as well as trees with sprawled roots clinging onto to the edges of the cliff walls. While they say that the sunset is spectacular at Inspiration Point, I also believe that sunrise would be equally stunning if the conditions are right.
