📍 Location & Trail Information
The Chasm View Overlook, on the South Rim of Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, looks straight into one of the narrowest and steepest stretches of the gorge. A short unpaved walk from a pullout on South Rim Drive leads to a railed viewpoint where the Gunnison River runs 1,820 feet below and the opposing rims stand only 1,100 feet apart, so the dark walls seem to close over the water. This is also where the river falls most sharply inside the park, dropping about 240 feet per mile as it cuts through ancient rock. It is one of twelve overlooks along the seven-mile South Rim Drive, and is definitely worth seeing when time is short.
