📍 Location & Trail Information
The Kneeling Camel Overlook is located on the North Rim of Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park. This overlook is only a few steps away from your car to the edge of the canyon and is located on the right hand side of the road, right before the end of North Rim Drive (G74). There are public vault toilets just past the overlook at the turnaround as well as access to the Dead Horse Trail.
From the Kneeling Camel Overlook, you get to see a clear shot of the Gunnison River curving in-between steep cliffs on both sides. In the foreground on the left hand side, there is a rock that looks like a camel kneeling at the rim, hence its name. If you are already on the North Rim, this location is well worth a stop.
Please note that it can take almost 2 hours to drive from the South Rim Visitor Center to the North Rim Ranger Station. The entire North Rim road is unpaved gravel and is closed to vehicles in the winter through late spring (typically mid-November-May). That said, the road is typically in good condition and is passable for most vehicles when open. (NPS) Because of its remote location, you will often have the North Rim of Black Canyon of the Gunnison to yourself, which provides a very peaceful experience.
